It’s an understandable feeling – so far this year Nintendo hasn’t released a lot of notable games. There has been a feeling that Nintendo’s 2018 lineup has so far been lacking. “Nintendo can have a truly remarkable performance just by focusing on the big releases for 2018.” In this case, focusing only on the games of 2018, how does Nintendo plan to stand out at E3 this year, in the face of competition that includes Microsoft, which has reserved an entire theater as its exhibition space, and Sony, who’s going to provide in-depth dives in highly anticipated exclusives? They have been adamant that games coming after 2018 will be discussed at a future date, so the possibility that Nintendo still has a few surprises that interrupt the schedule seems slim… doesn’t it?

This year, they’re narrowing the scope of what they’re presenting at E3 even further: they’re going to focus only on the 2018 games, and nothing else. They still have some of the biggest and most decorated booths at the show, but their lectures have been replaced by a variety of new formats prepared for the digital age, including digital events, Nintendo Directs, and Treehouse storefronts.Įach year they focus on something completely different – their E3 2016 has historically focused on one game to the exclusion of everything else (that game was Breath of the wild, and the concentration paid off, with Breath of the wild be awesome, and the hype for it leading directly to the Switch launch). There was a time when the company was pretty much synonymous with E3 festivities, but from that decade, foreseeing the dawn of the social media age, Nintendo began to approach E3 differently than with the spice of a great lecture on stage. NOTThe intendo approach at E3 has been the most fascinating to see in recent years.
